Packing heat ~ Fatal Fiction

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. This week, I’m sharing a snippet from my latest release Fatal Fiction, book 5 of the Harbour Bay series. Happy reading!

Opening the door to her room, she promptly ran into a shirtless Nick who, like her, was also packing heat. Nick squinted in the dark. There was no way he couldn’t make out the dark shadow in Riley’s hand.

“Jesus, Riley.”

She was really getting sick of those two words.

His attention returned to the matter at hand and together they made their way toward the front door. He spared another glance at her weapon. “Yours is bigger than mine.”

~Blurb~

Workaholic Riley O’Neill gets more than she bargained for when she unwittingly becomes a witness to a horrific murder…on paper.

When news of a similar murder to the one she read reaches her, Riley soon believes the killer is communicating with her.

When a second manuscript arrives, featuring her as a victim, she is packed up and placed into protective custody.

Detective Nicholas Doyle has wanted Riley since their first meeting…

But Nick has been burned before. This time, it wasn’t just his heart on the line. A failed relationship could destroy their circle of tight-knit friends which has him keeping his distance as much as possible.

He is her only option to stay safe.

Confined together for the first time, Nick and Riley must confront their feelings and fears and learn to get along while fighting the desire that’s been burning beneath the surface for over a year.

Time begins to run out. The killer still at large, and moving closer to Riley with each murder. One wrong move and Riley is at the killer’s mercy.

Keeping Riley safe from the killer is easy. Keeping his hands off her is another story…

Her gaze flittered around, almost searchingly, before boldly planting herself in his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held him close. Startled, Nick froze as his whole body went on alert as Riley snuggled against him. Fighting back the urge to push her away, fear at where their current position might lead, he drew her closer, savouring the feel of her in his arms.

His chest ached, grateful for Riley knowing exactly what he needed. He didn’t want kind words or even outrage on his behalf. He simply wanted to know he wasn’t alone. He took the comfort she freely offered, squeezing her within the enclosure of his arms.

She hesitated.

“I suggest you get your arse moving.”

Riley glared at Nick, he was seriously annoying her. “Such language, Detective Doyle. How is that you got a reputation of being a lady’s man?”

“I’m perfectly rational and polite with all other members of your sex. It appears only you, Riley O’Neill, can send my manners and good intentions out the window.”

She followed Nick out, speeding up so she didn’t fall behind and he made good on one of the many threats he’d issued this morning.

Why the hell could he not get his legs to follow after her and show her what he’d been hiding all this time?

Because he was scared. He had no idea how to get over it. Even now, he found it hard to trust.

Plates clanged as she stacked them in the dishwasher. He cursed softly.

The sooner he closed this case and brought the killer to justice, the sooner he could move Riley out of his life. Seeing her only wedged the knife further into his heart and until he was ready to take the plunge he had to keep his hands, and lips off of her.

Her heart thumped and her mouth went dry. Why did she have to have such a response to him when she couldn’t get a smidge of attraction from him?

Riley found she liked him exerting control, taking charge. He didn’t dominate or order her about but still took action. She was too used to being the one arranging everything. It was nice to have someone take care of her for a change.

Especially now, when fear was slowly paralysing her.

She held on tightly to Nick, never wanting to let him go.

“I was going to let you walk away without explaining my actions. But I can’t. I won’t. For notorious sex club owner Aimee Burnes, it’s all about business. That is until her estranged sister, Louisa, is found dead in the small, coastal town of Harbour Bay. With both of them craving more than an intense encounter leaving them sweaty and satisfied, outside dangers challenge their newfound bond. He hesitated as he looked over at Declan. Did he want to kiss her goodbye, but was too afraid to do so in front of her brother?

Declan crossed his arms over his broad chest. “A real man would kiss a woman regardless of the company and possible death sentence he’d be signing for fooling around with a man’s sister.”

Nick grinned. “I think I’m going to like you, O’Neill.”

He grabbed her waist, hauling her up against him and gave her a goodbye kiss she wouldn’t forget for a while. When he was done he winked at her, inclined his head towards Declan and walked out his front door.

Huffing out a breath, he leaned down and rested his palms on the armrests, effectively caging her in.

“Just give me an excuse to hurl you over my shoulder.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “You wouldn’t!”

“Test me and find out.” He pushed away and collected her coat from the back of his chair and held it out to her.

She knew better than to push him any further and quickly stood to allow him to assist her.

His fingers brushed against the back of her neck, sending a sizzle of awareness down her spine.

Dean doesn’t believe in love. It makes men weak and vulnerable, and as a retired soldier, he’s experienced enough heartache to last several lifetimes. He also has difficulty dealing with emotional women. So when he shows up to interview Megan at the request of his boss, he isn’t exactly looking forward to it. Except Megan isn’t what he expected.

Megan is intelligent, witty, and not to mention, beautiful. Dean tries to maintain a professional distance, but with a killer on the loose, he breaks all his rules and gets involved. He offers Megan comfort and promises he might not be able to keep.

The body count continues to rise and Dean’s leads are empty as ever…

When Megan disappears too, Dean knows his time to solve this case is up. He must unravel the twisted web of clues the killer has left behind or risk the one woman who might finally teach him to love again.

Uh oh ~ Fatal Fiction

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. Today, I’m sharing a snippet from my latest release Fatal Fiction, book 5 of the Harbour Bay series. Happy reading!

He moved quickly across the small space dividing them so fast she had no time to prepare. Her head snapped back as he backhanded her. Her cheek stung, already bruised from his earlier attack. Riley tasted blood this time, her teeth cutting into the soft tissue of her mouth.

A hand wrapped around her throat and applied force. A second later, cool steel pressed against her skin.

The Harbour Bay Gang are Back with book 5, Fatal Fiction!

New Release!

The Harbour Bay Gang are back with the release of Fatal Fiction, book 5 in the series featuring Detective Nick Doyle and feisty red-head, Riley O’Neill. I’m so excited to finally share their story.

Nick has always been a favourite of mine since his appearance in book one. Kind, considerate, and a bit of a joker until the situation calls for serious. I knew he needed a special woman by his side. Riley is strong, stubborn and bossy with a vulnerable side and has been hurt in the past. For Nick, it seems he can’t do anything right. Not quite an enemies-to-lovers story, the two encounter many roadblocks on their way to a HEA.

“She never feared reading a book…until now.”

A deep sorrow ~ The Dead Don’t Lie

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels.

Aimee hugged her arms around her raised legs and rested her head on her knees. Pain washed over her and pierced her heart until she was struggling to breathe. She’d never been close with her sister but that didn’t mean she wanted any harm to come to her. She swallowed hard at what it must’ve been like for her sister, scared and alone, knowing no one would come to her rescue—that she would die. Aimee squeezed her arms tighter around her legs in an effort to provide herself comfort.

It was what she’d been doing for most of her life. Comforting herself because she knew she couldn’t count on anyone else.

She was alone.

Club X—where fantasy and reality collide…

For notorious sex club owner Aimee Burnes, it’s all about business. That is until her estranged sister, Louisa, is found dead in the small, coastal town of Harbour Bay. Having always been the favourite of their hyper-religious mother, there’s no logical explanation for Louisa’s untimely death—unless she wasn’t the angel she was believed to be.

Aimee will do anything to protect her club, including corrupting a detective with old-fashioned ideals…

James Hawke is Harbour Bay’s newest detective. He’s a country boy through and through, and he’s not prepared for Aimee’s assault on his senses. When he’s sent undercover into Club X to collect intelligence on Aimee and her clients, James wants to believe she’s genuine. The only thing he knows for sure is he wants her in ways he never wanted anyone before. Deep undercover, he must sacrifice his morals to get close.

Aimee is a master of manipulation…

Aimee will do what she must, even if it means taking her seduction of James too far. With both of them craving more than an intense encounter leaving them sweaty and satisfied, outside dangers challenge their newfound bond. But when the medical examiner finds incriminating evidence pointing to Aimee as her sister’s killer, James is forced to choose…

Will he honour the oath of his badge, or believe in Aimee’s innocence, regardless of the evidence stacking against her? With her lies unmasked and her innocence questioned, proof lies in the DNA evidence.

#WeWrWa #Snippet ~ Open Wounds

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. Below is a sexy snippet from the second book in my Harbour Bay series.

The front door to Kellie’s house banged loudly against the wall as they pushed it open. Darryl shoved her none too gently backwards, his lips pressed against hers, his tongue stroking the fire burning in his gut. Kellie clung to him, her arms around his neck, pulling him closer.

He held her hips tight, crushing her body against his, and she felt so good. Soft and womanly. She tasted of peppermint and he’d never liked the flavour more. The front door slammed shut as Darryl kicked it closed with his foot. His body was hard and aching, screaming for release.

~Blurb~

Internal Affairs officer Kellie Munroe is investigating one of her own…

Kellie and Detective Amelia Donovan were childhood friends, until a horrifying event destroyed their friendship. Now Amelia is slated for promotion to Superintendent, but her career is in jeopardy following a physical altercation with a suspect, and her history with Kellie complicates the already sensitive investigation.

Amelia’s partner Darryl Hill must work with Kellie, despite serious reservations…

Darryl is loyal, ethical, and dedicated to his work, but he can’t contain his curiosity about Kellie, who always seems to push his partner’s buttons. When their investigation leads to criminal kingpin Dick Coleani and a string of murdered men, an attempt on their lives sends Kellie into a panic, reigniting memories of her childhood trauma.

As Darryl helps Kellie through her fear, he can no longer deny his attraction to her…but he wants more than the broken, traumatised woman feels capable of giving.

Terrifying personal threats force Kellie to pursue answers in secret…

When Kellie begins to suspect this case and Coleani might somehow be connected to her own personal nightmare, she will need help from both Darryl and Amelia as she plunges down a perilous path.

But will Darryl be able to rein in her quest for justice before the past repeats itself and Kellie is left with another—possibly fatal—open wound?

#WeWrWa #Snippet ~ Doppelgänger

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. I’m back with another snippet of Doppelganger. I’ve mentioned before my love of Dean and really, is it any wonder?

As if sensing his perusal, Megan glanced over at him and his knees weakened. Her eyes—those gorgeous emerald pools—pulled at him, so full of torment that his heart ached. Shit, this was crazy and so unlike him.

She blinked and he heard her sharp exhale, her mouth parted, and she looked so irresistible that he was sorely tempted to cross the short distance between them and find out if she tasted as good as she looked. He was at a loss, unable to pull away as she continued to stare at him. Was she feeling as out of control as him?

He forced himself back on track. He was here to work a case, not look for his next bed partner, and while Megan was quite delectable, she would hardly do.

#Snippet ~ The Dead Don’t Lie

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. Here’s a snippet from The Dead Don’t Lie (book 3 of the Harbour Bay Series). Happy reading!

He was the dumbest man ever. She’d done this to him. She’d tied him up in knots until he couldn’t think straight. Did she get some sick pleasure from playing this game with him, or was she merely distracting him from getting too close to her secrets? Had she killed her sister? Not too long ago he wouldn’t have believed that but now he wasn’t so sure. Aimee had certainly proved she could do a lot of things he hadn’t thought possible.

And he’d fallen in love with her.

His skin burned where he touched her, his palm tightening in reflex. Forcing his hand to remain still, instead of stroking her like he wanted to, he stared at their reflections in the stainless steel of the elevator door. His lungs burned and he felt short of breath when he caught her gaze.

Not speaking or dropping eye contact, the air between them crackled with unseen energy, the tension building like the beginning of a brilliant storm, gathering in intensity. His mouth went dry, his stomach jittering with awareness and he felt the shift in her body where he continued to hold her and he knew without having to ask that she was feeling it too.

Chest rising and falling with quick breaths, Megan’s lips parted, her tongue slipping out to wet them. He stiffened and her eyes widened as if realising what she’d just done.

Aimee had never been in an interview room before but it looked just like it did in the movies. She nervously bit her bottom lip and settled into the uncomfortable seat.

This is bad. This is really fucking bad.

The charge was murder. The sentence may as well be life. By the time she got out, she would be old enough for retirement. How could they think she could kill her own sister?

Welcome to my blog. I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. It’s been a few weeks since I posted, I’ve been scouring Pinterest for ideas on bullet journals (I just love the look of them) so I can keep track of all the things I’m missing lately. I’ve shared a few snippets from Open Wounds before but since it’s free this weekend I thought I’d share another. Intrigued? Grab yourself a copy from Amazon Kindle and read the whole book.

The back of her neck tingled and her ingrained survival instincts screamed at her to run. She retreated quickly only to find herself trapped by thick bulging arms as they wrapped around her waist and throat, squeezing hard and cutting off oxygen. Kellie struggled. Her feet dangled in the air as she was lifted up off the ground. Her mind flew into a panic.

Blackness whirled behind her eyes as little sparks of light mingled with the dark. The nails of her free hand dug into her captor’s arms as she began to hyperventilate. Within minutes she would be unconscious or dead and considering what lay beyond for her, she welcomed death.

Darryl pushed past Kellie and stepped into the house. He swung around and took stock of her pale skin and white knuckles holding too tight onto the bat.

“I hope you’re not planning on using that thing on me.”

Kellie frowned, confused. “Darryl, what are you doing here?”

She still hadn’t relinquished the bat which he took for a bad sign and immediately stepped forward and relieved her of it, placing it in the corner. He then turned his attention on her, looking her up and down, his brief but thorough survey not missing much.

#WeWriWa #Snippet ~ Not Forgotten

Hi all, I’m Camille Taylor. I write romantic suspense and small-town romance novels. This is my first Weekend Writing Warriors post. My New Years plan had been to post from the first weekend of 2018, however, my shocking memory had me forget until it was too late. Not this time, lol. Here is an excerpt from my first romantic suspense novel, Not Forgotten (Book 1, Harbour Bay Series) – ironic title considering my memory 🙂

Without sparing a moment to wallow in self-pity she climbed to her feet, feeling her ankle buckle beneath her before crashing once more to the ground. She bit her bottom lip to stop from crying out and alerting the man to her location and started crawling, her pants soaking up the damp ground. She barely made it a metre before she felt the ground beneath her give way to a sharp decline.

Hallie’s hand flayed about in mid-air for a moment right before her body slipped and she tumbled down into the river resting at the base of the decline. Her head went under the water and she struggled not to breathe. She kicked her feet and tried to swim as she resurfaced. Her waterlogged clothes tugged at her, determined to send her to a watery grave. The current proved to be too strong and pulled her light weight away from the edge and into the whirling centre before she was once more dragged under, down into the murky depths.

SYNOPSIS

Doppelgänger by Camille TaylorA new killer has descended on Harbour Bay, and he’s already killed five women…

Bestselling author Megan Bailey is devastated when her young cousin Stacey goes missing. She’s been watching the news and knows what this might mean. Stacey could be the newest victim of Harbour Bay’s newest serial killer. Megan is determined to do something, and enlists the help of her friend, the superintendent of police, Amelia Donovan.

Amelia has her best detective on the case…Dean Matthews.

TEASER

He turned around, his entire body taut with tension. His blood pounded in his ears as he absorbed her words, his gaze searching hers for sincerity. She was close to tears, her whole body quivering as if ready to give out on her completely. She did need him. He took a deep breath, preparing himself for what he knew would come next. Megan was too tempting for him to have any kind of choice.

He crossed the small space between them, and Megan’s eyes widened at his speed. He caught hold of her head, cradling it on the perfect angle. Dean no longer wanted to fight it. He kissed her like he’d wanted to from the beginning, hard, rough, deep, a show of things to come. Megan’s arms fastened around his neck, holding on tight as he continued to seduce her with his tongue.

The barely restrained passion and desire they’d kept bottled up ignited immediately and he heard Megan moan. It wasn’t a mistake. Loving her could never be a mistake. Everything felt so right and never before had he wanted a woman more. His usual restraint was non-existent now that Megan was in his arms, almost as wanton as him.

It was pure comfort, he told himself, nothing more. He wasn’t entirely sure who he was comforting, but at the present moment it didn’t really matter. The only thought in his mind was Megan writhing beneath him in complete abandon.

He knew he should slow down, make sure this was what she wanted. He needed to know it was him she wanted, that not any man would do. But somewhere on the path from his brain to his mouth the words got lost along with any thoughts of slowing down.

He was going to break every rule, self-imposed and otherwise. He needed Megan. Maybe more than she needed him. She twisted him up, turned him inside out and nothing would stop him from having her. She was under his skin, buried deep, all the way to his soul. Usually, he’d be clawing his way out, but instead he found himself wanting more. Wanting everything Megan was willing to give.

Surprisingly, he didn’t warn her like all the other women he’d slept with over the years about his lack of commitment. Didn’t tell her she was making one of the biggest mistakes of her life by caring for him, letting him into her heart and body. He would never be able to reciprocate and he knew he would break her heart. But at that moment he simply didn’t care. All he wanted right now was Megan. One hundred percent of her. How could he be so careless? That he could possibly destroy everything good in her? Who was he kidding? He wanted her, and damn his rules. He couldn’t walk away, not now.

His hands slid from her face down the curves of her body to her waist, his rough calloused fingers working their way under the cotton material and onto skin so soft it was like touching silk.

TEASER

“I had quite the unconventional childhood.” She picked at her nails. He noticed her thumbnail had been chewed into a jagged edge. “I never set foot inside a classroom until I was nine. My father was a musician and we followed him from town to town. Did you know I won my first literary award when I was eleven?”

Dean shook his head.

“It was called Tour Girl and it was about a young girl who toured the world with her famous father, only she manages to get caught up into a high profile criminal case. In the end, she foiled the bad guys’ plan just in time to watch her father play.” She smiled at the memory. “It was a ridiculous, childish story.”

“It couldn’t have been that bad. It set you on your path.”

“No, I have my mother to thank for that. She was extremely intelligent, always expanding her mind. She surprised many people who believed her to be a simple roadie. They were always underestimating her, but she proved them wrong. There was a brilliant brain inside her head. My mother tutored me. She was determined my education wouldn’t suffer because of our nomadic lifestyle and had me constantly constructing stories, making use of the English language in all its complexities.”

“She sounds like an amazing woman.”

Megan smiled, warming his heart.

“She was. What about you, Detective? How did you end up as one of Harbour Bay’s finest?”

“We were talking about you.”

“We were…and now we’ve moved on to you, temporarily. I’m extremely curious about you, Detective.”

His heart thumped. She couldn’t mean in the way he hoped, but the words still affected him. Much more than they should have.

“Not much to tell. There’s not much work for an army man, at least one who wants to remain active in the field.”

“Yet, you chose to serve your community as a government man rather than in the private sector.”

“It was never about the money.”

“Which is what makes you special, Detective. The kind of people I write about—a real hero. You might not recognise it in yourself, but others do. I do. You care about those around you, those who are taken advantage of, who can’t fend for themselves.”

His face heated. He wasn’t used to such praise. He cleared his throat. “You were telling me about yourself.”

She appeared to examine his expression for a moment. “I embarrassed you, didn’t I? I’m sorry, and you’re right, we were talking about me. From a young age, I was blessed with the ability to tell a story of distant lands, magical places, and knights in shining armour. Nothing was too grand or wild or beyond belief. The sky was the limit. Stories just came alive in my head. My mother encouraged me and fed my mind with the classics, even the books you’ll never see on a shelf, ones long forgotten.”

He grinned and ran his fingers through his short hair, his fingertips brushing against his head. “My mother would like you.”

Megan frowned. “Why is that?”

“Because you’re the very embodiment of everything she’s ever wanted. She’s spent her life collecting and preserving books. Like your own mother, she consumed every written word she could get hold of. It was hard being the only kid in primary school who’d devoured every Shakespeare play, or Scott and Dickens novel in existence.”

His mother had ensured he’d not grown up ignorant and he knew words that could probably rival Megan’s extensive vocabulary, but he didn’t like to flaunt it. Besides, he rarely had the opportunity.

Megan’s enthusiasm was clear. “I’d love to meet her some time, discuss her latest find. Although I doubt I’d be of interest to her. My novels aren’t exactly going to stand the test of time like Austen or Alcott. But that’s okay, because it’s not why I do it. Not to sound conceited, but I want to share my vivid imagination with the world, or at least that’s my dream. Right now I’m working from the east coast to the west, but one day I’ll get there.”

“I don’t doubt it. You are a strong-willed woman, and like Stacey, you’ll get what you want in the end.”

“You make that sound like a threat or a promise.” She straightened. “It’s hard. As a writer, everywhere you look you see a story developing. You hear something and the next minute you have a plot sitting in your head. Hell, even my dreams are narrated like a book.”

“I wasn’t complaining. I like it. It’s sexy,”

Oh shit, did I just say that? Sexy?Great, now she knows. But from the moment they met, he hadn’t been able to take his eyes off her. She’d probably already realised it.

“Uh—”

“It’s all right. I know. You think I’m sexy.” She blushed, turning away.

She was teasing him, and she wasn’t very good at it, either. It was obviously as alien to her to tease as it was for him to receive. He couldn’t remember the last time any woman had teased him.

They stood staring at each other for several long minutes, and the urge to take her in his arms was strong. He found himself gravitating towards her tempting lips.

Up against a brick wall, Matt has no choice but to contact the only surviving witness-seventeen-year-old Hallie Walker. Gifted psychologist Natalie Miller sees a lot of herself in Hallie and vows to help her heal.

Matt and Natalie face danger at every turn, but can’t fight the powerful attraction between them.

Natalie thinks her only problem is a deranged ex-boyfriend, but is it possible she’s attracted the attention of The Butcher? When the serial killer strikes again, they know he’s close, and Matt is frantic to catch him…because now he has more than ever to lose.

Excerpt

Natalie parallel parked beside Matt’s police issued Holden Commodore outside a small seventies era building on Alcott. An obscure sign indicated it was Tanner’s Bar and Grill. She had never heard of it and wouldn’t have known it was there if she hadn’t been directly in front of it.

She met Matt on the sidewalk and he opened the door for her. Natalie stepped through the opening and stopped to take in her surroundings. Tanner’s wasn’t going to make any reviews in the Harbour Bay Tribute. A bar was situated to the left and several flat screen TVs hung on the wall, showing various sporting events. An ATM was wedged between two doors which she assumed were the toilets from the stick figure images on each door. The right side of the room was lined with several booths and a few two seater tables were placed sporadically around the floor for those not wishing to sit at a booth or the bar.

Despite the mid-day hour, the bar was packed with men in uniform. Tanner’s was apparently a cop’s hangout which explained why she’d never heard of it. Not that she went out regularly but she often heard about the restaurants in town in the elevator on the way to her office and filed away the names of the ones that received good reviews for when she didn’t feel up to microwaving and could pick up dinner on the way home.

“We can go somewhere else if you’d like,” Matt said as she took in the bar.

Natalie turned to him and smiled.  “No, this is fine. Let’s get a booth.”

She followed Matt towards the back of the bar to one of the last remaining booths. He nodded to several people as he passed and they reciprocated, giving her a quick scrutinising look before turning back to their drinks and sporting events.

Soft music played on hidden speakers before being drowned in a cheer that rose from the men milling around the bar. Natalie stumbled and let out a sound as she started to fall. Matt adroitly spun around and caught her easily before she fell to the rough, sticky floor.

“Are you all right?” he asked and she shivered, the heat of his hands on her body causing her a delicious chill.

Natalie nodded and looked down at her bare foot then back a few paces to where her blue pump—that matched her blouse—remained. Matt followed her gaze then bent to pick up her heel which had been glued to the floor by something she stepped in. He glanced at her and gave her a sheepish smile before he lifted her leg gently. Natalie caught hold of his shoulder to keep her balance as, like Prince Charming, he slipped the shoe on her foot.

Natalie felt the burn of his hand on her leg and desperately wanted him to slide his hand under her skirt. Her breath caught in her throat as her mind was overrun by erotic thoughts. She blinked to clear her vision and blushed when he looked at her questioningly.

“Thank you.”

He smiled, the dimple in his cheek showing. How she wanted to kiss that dimple, the man and his entire body.

“You’re welcome. Take a seat. I’ll go order. What would you like?”

Natalie slipped into the nearest booth, all the while chastising herself and her wayward thoughts. She was no Cinderella and while this man was delicious, he was not someone she could fool around with. Could she?

Natalie grabbed the folded laminated menu from where it had been propped up between the salt and pepper shakers and perused the list while silently willing her heart to quit beating so fast.

“Chicken burger with fries and tomato sauce,” she told him.

“No salad?” he joked.

“I already have a round figure with meat on my bones so I doubt it would matter much,” she muttered, then glanced up to find him staring at her in surprise. “Sorry. Something one of my patients said.”

He gave her a slow once over that made her blood boil and she let out a breath.

“You don’t have to worry. It’s all in the right places,” Matt told her. “What would you like to drink?”

She forced herself to speak. “House wine will be fine.”

One drink certainly wasn’t going to affect her mental capacity and if she was survive the next hour or so with him on the opposite side of the booth she would need some fortification.

“I’ll be right back.”

Matt moved off to the bar. She watched him speak with a few people he knew for a moment, then retrieved the file out of her tote bag and placed it on the table, cautious of wet spots or sticky substances on the scarred wood.

She had missed him, she realised. It was crazy but after last night something had changed in their relationship. What that was, she had no idea. Somewhere between favourite all-time album and his most embarrassing moment, the tone had changed and now she was wondering where that left them. Beyond the professional and dipping a toe into the personal, testing the waters. But was that all they would be?

She knew he was attracted to her. The heat in his eyes told her that and she was definitely feeling attraction towards him. Was it possible to move forward and go somewhere deeper? More intimate? She hoped so. Obviously they would have to wait. The circumstances of their meeting and the cases they were working on were the priority. There would be time afterwards to explore the possibilities. Although, truth be told, she wasn’t sure she could wait that long. He had seriously messed with her hormones.

Natalie tore her thoughts and her stare away from Matt and took another glance around. The bar, despite its grungy appearance, had a nice ambience. It wouldn’t have been her first or second pick, but she knew better than anyone not to judge a book by its cover. The smells emanating from the kitchen made her stomach growl and she was thankful no one was around to hear it. She had only had a coffee and banana for breakfast and was glad Matt had asked her for lunch otherwise she was sure she wouldn’t have had anything other than the protein bar that was in her desk drawer.

A minute later, Matt returned and set the wine glass down in front of her.

“Our orders will be done in about five minutes,” he informed her as he sat and took a sip from his own glass. It looked like coke and she couldn’t smell any of the J’s—Jim, Johnny or Jack—and had been served in an official Coca-Cola branded glass.

“On the clock,” he said, and Natalie realised she must have been staring intently at the glass.

“When you’re not on the clock, what do you drink?”

“A beer now and again. Whisky when it’s been that kind of a day.”

For some reason, the idea of him drinking didn’t scare her as it would if he had been anyone else. She trusted him, which surprised her. Trusted him to keep her safe and that was a big thing for her. The revelation was startling and telling.

“I can’t imagine what you see day in and day out.”

He shrugged. “It’s not all bad. Thankfully, murders are few and far between. There are still car accidents which can be brutal, and domestic violence. They always leave a foul taste in my mouth.”

She could well imagine those scenarios. Blood. Bruises. Tears. Pain.

“How long have you been a cop?”

“Over fifteen years.”

She sat forward. “How do you handle the dark side of your job?”

He gave it some thought. “By focusing on the people I can help. Knowing that I have changed their lives for the better. Although I didn’t do such a good job with Hallie.”

Natalie placed her hands over his where they rested on the table and gave them a squeeze. “Hallie is not lost. She may be scared. But she is tough. You saw that years ago. I see that today.”

“You gave her the files, didn’t you?” he asked. She started to pull her hands back but Matt caught them with his own and held them there. He pinned her with his green gaze.

“I did and before you blast me for it, remember you came to me for help. That’s what I’m doing. Trust my instincts, Detective.”

“I do. I just don’t like the idea of Hallie reading it, even if she did experience it firsthand.”

“Which is why I believe reading the case would be far better than having her relive it through memories. In your files, the case is laid out plain and simple. Just facts. She can be somewhat emotionally detached which hopefully will have her remembering the night clearer. I can’t guarantee that she can assist your case but it’s worth the chance.”

“So long as it helps her, I honestly don’t care.”

A young waitress approached the booth holding a tray with two plates on it. “Beef burger and salad?”

Matt indicated himself and reluctantly they broke apart. Natalie didn’t miss the look the woman shot her before placing the plate with Matt’s burger down in the space where their joined hands had been.

“I guess that makes you chicken and chips,” the waitress stated to Natalie as she set down the plate with the chicken burger in front of Natalie. “So who’s your friend, Matt?”

Natalie shot him an amused look. He had a pained expression on his face. It was clear everyone would be talking about their lunch for some time.

“Natalie Miller,” Natalie introduced herself.

“Glory,” the waitress said. “You have a nice lunch, Natalie, and don’t be a stranger.” She gave Natalie a wink only she could see before moving off back behind the bar.

Natalie blushed and turned her attention to her lunch. She poured the tomato sauce over her chips and then popped one into her mouth and looked over at Matt.

“This is a really friendly place,” she commented.

“Yeah. As you might’ve guessed, it’s a cops’ hang out. Tanner, who owns the place, is a retired cop. We all supported him when he first opened and still come because it’s the best food in town. I forgot that bringing you here would be like bringing you home to meet my mother.”

Her stomach did a somersault. She tried to ignore the pleasure she felt at that thought. She tampered down her emotions. He had said he’d forgotten not that he was serious enough about her to declare her to one and all.

“Are you going to cop much flack?”

“Not from these guys. My own team, yes, but that’s okay because we often tease each other. I’ll just be on the receiving end this time.”

“You don’t sound too worried.”

“I’m not.”

Natalie wondered what that meant. But then decided to stop analysing the situation and his words and just enjoy it. She took another chip and munched. Matt reached over and stole a chip from her plate. She widened her eyes dramatically and scolded him.

“If you wanted chips you should’ve ordered chips.” She smiled mischievously, picked up her fork and speared a rich, ripe tomato from his plate and popped it into her mouth. He laughed heartily then traded her half his salad for half her chips.

Aimee closed the door behind them and leaned heavily against it before sliding to the floor. She stared at the wall of her office as she tried to make sense of things.

Louisa was dead. Murdered.

It was no mistake. She’d been positively identified, and this wasn’t some cruel joke.

How could this be happening? It was so unreal she couldn’t get her brain to fully grasp it. The last time she’d seen Louisa, her sister had been happy and healthy, and now she was gone. A whisper raced across her mind.

Dead.

Murdered.

Aimee shook uncontrollably as grief overwhelmed her. She pushed back the sob rising in her throat and blinked away the tears stinging her eyes. Crying never fixed anything. Nothing could fix this situation.

Louisa was gone.

She drew in a ragged breath as she tried to rein in her emotions, burying her head in her hands. She replayed the last conversation she had with her sister. Louisa had been pushing to forget the past. To make peace. As if that would ever happen. Especially now that Louisa was gone. She was the only one who’d cared that the Burnes family was fractured.

Ruth certainly didn’t. After all, she was the one who’d made it so.

She shuddered when she thought of her mother, who hadn’t been in the best of health to begin with. This could kill her. When Louisa had told her about their mother’s declining health, Aimee had been surprised. She thought the old bitch too mean to be struck down. She’d been wrong. Not that her mother would be dying soon, but each day she was weakening and might not last more than five years.

Would she mourn her mother as she did her sister? Probably not, because she’d grieved for her mother years ago, grieved for the love that had never been there and how easily her mother had tossed her aside.

Aimee contemplated calling her, reaching out, but immediately dismissed the idea. She was in no position to offer sympathy or a shoulder to cry on and her mother wouldn’t accept any of those from her even if she was.

Her mother had never warmed to her. It wasn’t a figment of her imagination. Ruth had told her numerous times that she wished Aimee had never been born. She made no bones on showing her younger daughter how she truly felt. Once it had hurt her, but now she was used to meaning nothing to the woman who had given her life.

The Dead Don't Lie Teaser 2It was what she’d been doing for most of her life. Comforting herself because she knew she couldn’t count on anyone else.

She was alone.

Truly alone. She hadn’t appreciated her sister while she had the chance and now she would never be able to change that.

It was an opportunity lost.

She fought against the sorrow weighing heavily on her. Aimee pushed away from the floor. It would do no good to wallow in misery. She could change nothing and feeling sad would only pull her down into the dark abyss of depression.

Her breath left her in a loud exhale as she caught her reflection in the mirror she’d affixed to the wall in an attempt to make her office look larger. Her eyes were stormy with emotion she refused to shed, her skin pale even beneath the foundation she wore. Beyond that, she saw her sister. She touched her jaw. She and Louisa had looked identical for years, with their sandy blonde hair and grey eyes. Aimee had eradicated all of the similarities years ago when she’d left Harbour Bay for Sydney.

She’d gone from one side of the colour spectrum to the next and dyed her hair raven black. Then she’d begun to cover her face with make-up. Anything to change until she couldn’t even recognise herself. Her mother had never condoned make-up or nail polish. She admitted she’d gone a little overboard but for the first time in her life she’d been able to do as she wished and without judgement. Or at least, none she cared about.

It had been the most freeing experience of her life. The most beneficial. Over the years, she’d become more comfortable with herself, with her past, and she’d transformed back to her old self. But she’d never returned to her blonde roots, much preferring the darker shade that drew attention to her eyes and made them sparkle.

She blinked moisture away, unable to keep from dwelling on all she had lost. Why had she been so stubborn? Her sister had gone to her grave believing Aimee wanted nothing to do with her. That couldn’t be more wrong. Louisa was her older sister. She’d been there her entire life. Maybe not always on her side, but she’d looked up to her sister. Idolised her. Aimee couldn’t believe she’d never see her again. She shivered and rubbed her hands up and down her arms to ward off the chill.

What the hell had happened? Why had Louisa been taken from her?

She hadn’t been lying to the detectives when she’d said her sister was the sweetest, kindest woman she knew. Louisa had led an uninteresting life. She made no ripples. If anyone should’ve been a target, it was Aimee, since she dealt with less than favourable people on a daily basis.

Life rarely made sense.

She didn’t know what to do. Should she be calling someone to arrange the funeral? How long would it take for Louisa’s body to be released? She hadn’t thought to ask the detectives. Should she enquire? The older one had given her his card. What was the protocol for homicide investigations?

She sank heavily into the chair behind her desk. She felt a million years old. Her energy—her very essence—sapped from her body.

She glanced at her phone and then decided against making the call. Her mother wouldn’t appreciate her interference. Even if it alleviated Ruth’s stress levels and allowed her time to grieve.

She blew out another shaky breath and leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes against the agony she felt. Thousands of questions floated inside her head. The most persistent was, could she have prevented this tragedy?

The Dead Dont Lie

«« SYNOPSIS »»

The dead don’t lie…

New Release ~ Open Wounds by Camille Taylor

I’m thrilled to announce book 2 in my Harbour Bay Series, Open Wounds is now live on Amazon.

Open Wounds by Camille Taylor

“Bad blood from the past can taint the present and destroy the future.”

Darryl leaned forward and kissed her softly, allowing her to feel the sweetness and emotion in the action, silently telling her that he planned to keep his promise to her. He took her hand and pulled her toward the sofa and sat down before tugging her onto his lap.

She put an arm over his shoulder and placed a hand on his chest as she leaned into him. He stroked her cheek, feeling her softness. He nuzzled her neck and she shivered. He loved how responsive she was to his touch. He placed his bandaged hand on her knee as Kellie tilted her head to give him better access. He took advantage of what she offered and she let out a moan.

He tightened his arm around her back as he slid his hand up her thigh. Her breath stuttered and she melted into him. He’d only meant to distract her from her morose thoughts but he was quickly losing sight of his good intentions. Kellie always had that effect on him. He breathed in her scent. She smelled delicious. He rested his head against hers.

“You drive me crazy, you know that?”

She let out a soft chuckle. Her breath tickled against his jaw and he shuddered. “Right back at you. What am I going to do about you? You’re extremely distracting.”

He grinned and snuggled against her, loving the feeling of her pressed against him. It reminded him of the other morning. He could get used to lazy moments like these when time seemed to slow down and they were the only two people in the world. When he imagined the future he saw them together curled up as they were now. Maybe a fire burning before them in the winter.

His heart swelled. “I like that it isn’t just me.

He felt her smile, her lips moving against his neck. What was going through her mind? Did she regret her desire for him? Would she walk away when the case was over? What would he do if he couldn’t convince her to give him a chance?
